Fault Finding in Ringwood

A “fishy” smell from your electrics is worth investigating.

I was called to a property in Ashley Heath, near Ringwood, after the immersion heater switch had stopped working properly and had become stuck in the ON position — the homeowner couldn't turn it off.

Once I investigated, I found this badly heat-damaged cable behind the switch.

The connection had become loose and had been arcing, generating a considerable amount of heat. Over time, that heat had damaged the cable and was also the reason the switch itself had failed.

Thankfully, the homeowner noticed something wasn't right and had it investigated.

⚡ Important homeowner tip:

If you ever notice an unusual burning or “fishy” smell around a switch, socket or electrical appliance — particularly if something has started behaving differently — please don't ignore it.

Electrical connections can deteriorate out of sight, and often the first warning is a smell, discolouration, warmth or a switch that suddenly doesn't operate as it should.

If you're concerned about something electrical in your home, it's always better to have it checked properly.
